    【Abstract】With the rapid development of our country's

    education, the progress of English teaching in higher vocational

    colleges is gradually developed. Effective teaching become an

    important teaching concept and goal of all school courses. This

    article, analyzes the present situation of English teaching in higher

    vocational colleges, and points out that the shortcomings in the

    process of higher vocational English(HVE) teaching. Finally,

    attempt to explore some effective strategies to improve the quality

    of HVE teaching.

    1. Introduction

    With the arrival of the era of economic globalization, the

    exchanges and cooperation between countries are becoming more

    and more frequent. English, as an international language, plays a

    very important role in the international communication. Therefore,

    the higher vocational colleges to cultivate the talents of the first line

    of society have paid more attention to the English teaching. Only

    by improving the level of English education in order to improve the

    overall level of education in higher vocational colleges, to enhance

    the comprehensive strength of college students. This paper firstly

    discussed the present situation of the HVE teaching and the existing

    problems. Then from the teacher' teaching practice, probes into

    the effective teaching of HVE. At last, put forward some feasible

    countermeasures and measures summarized.

    2. Present situation of English teaching in higher vocational

    colleges

    2.1 The lack of teachers and the quality of students

    From the perspective of the educational background of

    teachers, the vast majority of vocational college teachers with a

    more solid basic skills in English. However, due to the shortage of

    understanding of the professional requirements of the actual job.

    Eventually, resulting in theoretical teaching and practical work

    post demand had divorced.

    2.2 Single teaching method

    There are 100% of the teachers used a tape recorder, 62%

    of the teachers used the language laboratory in the classroom

    teaching, a few of teachers use other teaching equipment.

    2.3 The students' consciousness of vocational education

    institutions is slightly worse

    Vocational education college students' consciousness is a

    bit poor, and a general lack of initiative in learning, however for

    non professional courses of college English is lack of interest

    in learning. In this case, a lot of occupation colleges use the

    traditional “What I say goes” cramming method of teaching,

    and its teaching effect is not good.

    3. Effective teaching methods in HVE teaching

    3.1 Attach importance to skill training, pay attention to

    practice link

    HVE teaching should reflect the vocational education features

    with skill and practicality. So teaching should be based on task

    based teaching method, constructing of the student center, center

    experience,activities in the center of the teaching mode. According

    to different majors, the English class can be realistic and diverse.

    3.2 In accordance with their aptitude, hierarchical teaching

    Due to the complexity of the students in higher vocational

    colleges, the English level is uneven. We accordance with the

    development of each student, and the different situations of

    students to organize different classroom teaching, in order to

    obtain a better teaching effect.

    3.3 To cultivate students' interest in learning English

    According to students' categories: attitude, skill and cognition

    from low to high. Each category corresponds to different levels of

    learning, the higher the level of the corresponding subject content

    is more complex, mastery of the subject is also more accessible.

    The goals of attitude are usually aimed at the awakening and

    growth of attitudes, emotions and feelings.

    4. Discussion

    This research analyzed the present situation of English

    teaching in higher vocational colleges, and points out that the

    shortcomings in the process of HVE teaching. Then attempt to

    explore some effective strategies to improve the quality of HVE

    teaching. In short, to improve teaching methods, and ultimately

    achieve effective teaching, depends on the joint efforts of teachers

    and students of colleges and universities.
